Teaching Children to Value Water: Starting Awareness Early

One of PoVE Water’s goals is to help children understand the importance of water from a very young age. Early awareness builds lifelong habits — and in a world facing increasing water challenges, this understanding is more important than ever.
In Munich, Maria from WECF Germany is part of the water team working to bring this message into classrooms. She has led multiple workshops in Bavarian schools, each designed to spark curiosity and shift how children think about water.
Her sessions always begin with a simple but powerful question: “How much water do we consume daily in Germany?”
Most students struggle to answer. And that’s exactly the point.
The workshops show that water is not an unlimited resource — it’s something we rely on constantly, often without realising how much we use. By helping children reflect on this early, the workshops encourage a deeper appreciation for water and the need to protect it.
Raising awareness today means building more responsible citizens for tomorrow.
