Water Education in Schools: Why It Matters More Than Ever

In many regions across Europe, water is not treated as a standalone subject in the school curriculum. Instead, it appears occasionally within broader topics, often without the depth needed to understand its global importance.
This is the case in Bavaria, where WECF Germany has taken an active role in filling this gap by organising water workshops in schools. These workshops aim to help students understand water not only as a natural resource, but as a critical element of environmental sustainability, health, and daily life.
We spoke with Dr. Frederike C., a biology and chemistry teacher who has seen firsthand how these workshops impact her students. According to her, the sessions spark curiosity and shift perspectives in ways traditional lessons often cannot.
One student shared a powerful reflection after participating:
“I didn’t pay much attention to water before. Now it has definitely changed my way of seeing it.”
This simple sentence captures the essence of why water education matters. When young people understand the value of water, they become more conscious citizens — and that awareness is the first step toward long‑term change.
