🌊 From the Land of Blue Lakes to the Mediterranean: Learning Across Water Realities

Imagine a country where you can drink water from a well, swim in clean lakes, or enjoy clear sea water. This is everyday life in Latvia — often called the “Land of Blue Lakes.” 🇱🇻💙

Students Anete and Matiass, from Olaines College and Vidzeme Technology and Design Vocational School, shared their experiences and perspectives on water in their home country. Latvia is rich in freshwater resources, something many countries cannot take for granted.

To broaden their understanding, they travelled to Malta 🇲🇹, where the water situation is very different. Unlike Latvia, Malta has no permanent rivers or lakes and relies heavily on innovative solutions such as desalination and reverse osmosis to secure its water supply.

During the autumn school at MCAST, the students explored how Malta manages its scarce water resources and how technology plays a crucial role in ensuring access to clean and safe water.

For Anete, the motivation was clear:

“I especially wanted to learn other ways of making clean and healthy water so that I can get this knowledge to Latvia and use it to preserve my country’s water supply in the future.”

Her words perfectly reflect the spirit of PoVE Water: learning from different realities, sharing expertise, and building sustainable solutions together.

Water challenges may differ from country to country, but collaboration makes innovation stronger. 🌍💧

Because in the end, knowledge knows no borders.
